Bobbi Brown: Women Who Own It

Bobbi Brown Women Who Own It

Writing an introduction for the legendary Bobbi Brown is no small task.

The former makeup artist and founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics is unstoppable. In addition to creating a makeup empire, she is an author, co-owner of the newly opened George Inn hotel outside of NYC in Montclair, New Jersey, and founder of the content studio and event space 18 Label, also located in Montclair.

She is married to real estate developer Steven Plofker, with whom she has three sons, and their Montclair home is always bustling with friends, family, and visitors who imbue the space with warmth and happiness.

Brown lives for the unknown, isn’t shy to take risks, and believes that being comfortable in your own skin is key to living one’s best life. Her honesty is refreshing, her drive is inspiring, and her creativity is uplifting.

She’s an excellent addition to our Women Who Own It series, and a great reminder to always be true to yourself, no matter where life takes you.

Talk to us about The George Inn and 18 Label:

The George Inn:

My husband asked me to work with him on this project the day I left Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. The timing was perfect, and I jumped on it. I was very open to exploring another creative outlet. I am a serial entrepreneur who loves to dive into projects that are new and that I’ve never done before.

This one combined two of my favorite things: my love of travel and design. I love that each room in the hotel is a bit different, but all of them are comfortable and inviting.

18 Label:

My go-to studio for creating content as well as home for The Kitchen TV Show. I love the openness of it, and the ability to create new spaces to shoot.

How did you incorporate bits of Montclair’s community into The George Inn?

Some of our many partners are based in Montclair. We’ve curated our favorite Montclair salons, gyms, and restaurants, and made them a part of the hotel experience.

What is the most rewarding thing about being your own boss? The most challenging?

It’s simple, I like to be in charge—but that brings many challenges as well because you are ultimately responsible for everything.

How has running your own businesses changed your outlook on life?

To me, being the entrepreneur of your own life is similar to being an entrepreneur in business.

Best part of the job:

I love what I do, and I love the unknown.

Most surprising part of the job:

It’s amazing what you can do with a little, hardworking team.

What makes someone beautiful from the inside out:

Confidence. Being comfortable in your own skin.

Your #1 skincare and/or beauty tip:

Drink water and rest!

When traveling, you always buy:

Something from a local store.

Favorite NYC hidden gem and favorite Montclair spot:

My favorite NYC gem is The High Line, and my favorite spot in Montclair is the George, of course.

Favorite rap/hip-hop song:

“It Was All a Dream” by Biggie.

How you unwind and relax after a long day:

A martini.

Advice you’d give to other female entrepreneurs looking to start their own companies:

Don’t give up. When one door closes, look for a window to climb through. And be nice to everyone!

You empower women to look like themselves—what is the most gratifying part of that gift?

Helping them to be more confident in themselves. To accentuate what features they love instead of focusing on the ones they hate. Beauty is confidence.

Motto you live by:

Be who you are.
